Little River Raiders had its genesis in 1999, when a group of members within SSAA Military Pistol Club (MPC) got together and organized an event based around firearms reminiscent of the Wild West - single action revolvers, pistols caliber lever action rifles and side by side shotguns. Participants were encouraged to dress up as cowboys and cowgirls, and the event was called ‘Ace of Spades’, with the feature stage being a challenge to shoot the center out of the Ace of Spades (Playing card).
Ace of Spades’ was a great success and soon, on a visit to Ballarat Pistol Club, the MPC group discovered organized single action shooting and learned of the international governance of the sport by the Single Action Shooting Society Inc (SASS).
‘Ace of Spades’ was again held in 2000, and interest in single action shooting continued to grow so that the idea soon began to form of establishing an independent club devoted to single action. By 2001 we finally had the number of member’s necessary, and SASS (Vic) Little River Raiders Single Action Shooting Club officially came into being in February 2002.
Little River Raiders is home to the most comprehensive single action facilities in the state. Our Range is located at the SSAA (Vic) Eagle Park facility in Gifkins Road, Little River, and we hold monthly competitions on the third Sunday of every month commencing at 9:30am as well as practice days on most other Sundays. Single Action shooters compete within categories such as Traditional (fixed sights on handguns); Modern (adjustable sights) Juniors; Seniors (65+); and black powder categories. Ladies are catered for in each category, shooting against each other.
We also hold Long range Rifle events where we shoot period-correct single shot rifles such as the Sharps, Remington Rolling Block and Springfield trapdoor rifles. Lever action rifles in rifle caliber, pistol caliber and .22 are also a part of Long Range Rifle event.
Single Action Shooting is conducted in a spirit of fun where safety is always the priority. ‘Spirit of the Game’ defines our sport. Shooting excellence is commended, but it is not the driving goal. As well as using the firearms of the American West, our courses of fire are set around scenarios reminiscent of the era, and we dress in attire of the 1800’s. We are drawn to the romance of the Ol’ West, and we live the dream. As has been frequently said, “If you’re going to shoot Single Action, bring your sense of humor along with”
Membership of Little River raiders is open to any member of SSAA and you must have (or undertake to acquire) the requisite Handgun License as well as a Category B Long arms license
